Kaycia’s work demonstrates how mixed media art and fashion can link. She uses art to help her escape from everything around her, boost self-esteem, make her more confident, and become less anxious. Through experimentation, she is able to create a range of beautiful pieces, often turning doodles into sketches, which become unexpected pieces. She focusses on the relationship between form, colour, and emotion, working primarily with acrylic and water-based paint on canvas with a hint of oil, using a process of layering and building up to the surface of her paintings.
Kaycia’s journey has been about embracing Islamic culture, heritage, art, and architecture. She also has a passion for embracing Kenyan culture, art, prints, and patterns within her paintings. She thinks a lot about her multi-diverse background – born in Canada, living in London, growing up most of her life in Nairobi, Kenya, being part of the Ismaili community, and having heritage of Indian culture. Her canvas/paintings/sketches all start from the point of thinking about something meaningful to inspire her to portray her diverse identity and culture. This might be Humayun’s Tomb (restoration of historic Islamic buildings) to Islamic geometry (to reflect the language of the universe and help the believer to reflect on life and greatness of creation), to Sufism and Rumi (focusing on the worldly thoughts of purification to the soul, the mystical contemplation of God’s nature, Muslims seeking to find the truth of divine love and knowledge), to Kenyan and Indian culture and art. Her goal here is to create a sense of depth and complexity to invite viewers to look beneath the surface of her paintings to discover the emotions, beauty and other layers hidden within that painting.
For Kaycia, fashion is also an important factor in her everyday work. She enjoys wearing traditional clothes and learning about the intricate details deep within every piece made. She believes her interest in art and design was inspired at the age of six, watching her dad being creative around the house along with working on his cars.
Kaycia is studying at the University of the Arts London, studying Cordwainers fashion bags and accessories. There she is able to explore her art within the fashion industry. She enjoys using stories as themes when designing leather bags. She is still developing as an artist within the fashion industry, and is currently gaining experience at Louis Vuitton as a care service intern.
