Nimira Haji

Ugandan, Germany, Canada

"Born with a calling to be a visual artist, I urgently express thoughts through paintings, freeze moments in time with photography, and articulate truths through writing."

Nimira’s origin traces back to Uganda where she, accompanied by her parents, sought refuge in Germany at a tender age, escaping the brutalities of the dictator Idi Amin Dada. The caravan of her life embarked on a journey spanning three continents, entailing relationships, careers, births, and deaths. The well-trodden tracks in her mind – the undulating valleys and towering mountains of her heart, and the rhythmic ebb and flow of joy and sorrow within her veins – intricately shape the art she brings to life.

Born with an innate calling to be a visual artist and a storyteller, Nimira feels an urgency to translate her thoughts into paintings, freeze moments in time through photography, and articulate the truths pulsating within her heart through writing. However, a significant portion of her life unfolded in the scientific realm, where precision and accuracy are paramount. Dreamers in this world stifle their hearts and control their wrists, a constant reminder that they are holding a syringe, not a paintbrush.

In her retirement, Nimra revels in the liberation of losing herself within her own being. As an emerging artist, she wants to capture the wrinkles on a face that tells a unique story, trace the delicate veining of a furled leaf, and contemplate the softness of clouds drifting above her. Her emphatic belief resonates: “We tend to miss the beauty of sweet nuances when we look at the totality of a person. Or a rainforest. Or the endless sky. Or of our life itself.” Nimira stands poised at the intersection of her diverse life experiences, merging the precision of science with the unbridled expression of art.
