Vancouver BC, East Africa, Living In Canada Past 50 Years

"Diverse interests fuel me: travel, sculpture, pottery (wheel and hand-built), community service, competitive squash, tennis, cycling, and skiing when knees permit. Pottery is my true passion, crafting decorative and functional wares."

Shahira’s journey began in Uganda, and at the tender age of 10, she relocated with her family to Vancouver in 1969. Delving into academics, she pursued a major in French at the University and furthered her studies in Paris, France. Returning to Canada, she dedicated herself to postgraduate studies, shaping her path to becoming a French immersion teacher. Venturing back to Africa, she assumed the role of immigration officer for the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi. After six years, Shahira returned to Vancouver where she, alongside her husband, nurtured their two sons, Aadam and Rumi. During this period, she shared her expertise with a law firm on Canadian immigration matters and eventually established her immigration practice, successfully managing it for two decades.

Shahira’s interests span a spectrum: from avid traveller to sculptor, creating both functional and whimsical pottery through wheel and hand-building techniques. Engaged in community service, she also thrives in competitive squash and tennis, cycling, and skiing – when her knees permit.

Yet, among her diverse pursuits, pottery stands as her true passion. Her creations, ranging from decorative to functional ware such as mugs, bowls, platters, sushi dishes, and vases, reflect the depth of her dedication to the art form.
