"Art became solace amid a huge loss, shaping my remarkable journey into the world of Art"

In 2005, Zeni sought solace in the world of art after the heartbreaking loss of both her parents within a mere 40 days. This tragic period marked the beginning of her artistic journey, a journey that has since evolved into something truly remarkable.

During a session of profound grief, Zeni was presented with a unique opportunity: the chance to exhibit her artwork at Sunnybrook Hospital, with the proceeds from sales destined to benefit the institution. This event marked a turning point in Zeni’s life. She was advised to document her experiences, capturing the essence of her evolving creative spirit. Armed with her camera, Zeni embarked on a visual odyssey, capturing moments that would later contribute to her artistic narrative.

Her artistic endeavours have been both prolific and prestigious. Zeni’s participation in the Diamond Jubilee Art Exhibition at a regional level and her current involvement in her community’s Art Show serve as a testament to her dedication. Furthermore, she has graced numerous art exhibitions in Markham and Toronto, leaving a significant impact on the local art scene.

Zeni’s artistic skill has transcended regional boundaries, with her work being featured in five prominent mainstream museums. Her talent has garnered multiple accolades on ViewBug, solidifying her reputation as an exceptional artist. Beyond her visual artistry, Zeni has also showcased her literary skills by authoring five books. These include Heart Beats in an Oasis and How Things Grow, both of which are privately held. Additionally, she has penned and illustrated Little One, You Are the Universe and Toby, Toby and Bobby, collaborating with Mr Saqib Syed for its illustrations. Both are also available on Amazon.ca and Amazon.com.

Zeni’s commitment to her community is exemplified by her participation in the collaborative effort, Cooking up Feminism, with Scarborough Arts. This project united women from diverse cultures who collectively chronicled their traditional recipes passed down from mothers and grandmothers. Zeni not only contributed her culinary heritage but also documented the project through photography. The resulting books were shared with numerous mayors and government agencies.

In a multimedia approach, Zeni has also created films to accompany her books on Amazon, enhancing the immersive experience for her audience. These films were to be showcased at the prestigious Aga Khan Museum’s auditorium on 11 and 12 November 2023 (cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances), further solidifying her place in the world of art and creativity. Zeni Shariff’s journey from grief to artistic triumph is nothing short of inspiring, serving as a testament to the power of creativity and resilience.
