Zainab Khawaja, creates art that reflects her own identity as an American Muslim. She says: “Through my style… I believe I have been able to portray a greater appreciation of Islamic art and Arabic calligraphy from both a historical and modern aspect.”In her works, Zainab takes inspiration from Arabic calligraphy, islamic art and architecture along with Houston’s renowned artists.
Her inspiration majorly sources from historical mosques of Turkey, Spain and Cairo. She uses traditional elements like ceramic tiles or mirrors— materials that were used in the architecture and decor in the Fatimid era, Mughal, and Ottoman Dynasties. All of great significance in the history of Islam.
Her success is determined by, developing a unique pattern and style which is uncommon within the art world.
